PESTICIDES USE AND HEALTHY FOOD

stsarsa.jpg

Most of the pesticides carry significant risks in terms of human and environmental health (cancer, reproductive disorders, etc.). - As a result of intensive and unconscious use of pesticides themselves or their transformation products may remain in food, soil, air and water. High school level training on pesticide management, proper use and reduction methods of pesticide use is not common. Therefore; students are not aware of this. Nevertheless, in most of the Agricultural Vocational High Schools, we strive to train students who can do this. This lack of training and awareness led us to do this project.

The eTwinning project Pesticide Use and Helathy Food was a joint project of the COPEFA project partners SŠ Dalj Croatia, LTNB Alexandria Romania and IOFA Bagnoregio Italy. The responsible lead partner was LTNB. The project included teachers of agriculture department and students age 16 – 19 (1st – 4th grade high school).

Activities in our project were designed to explore pesticide derivatives, transformation products, metabolites, degradation products resulting from the use of pesticides in food and agricultural products; all substances that can cause toxicological pollution.

The activities included: 1. creation of avatars for all students and teachers; 2. raising awareness on harmful effects of pesticides – under mentorship of teachers, students explored and studied modules on the COPEFA e-learning platform to learn more about harmful effects of pesticides, to learn how to read danger pictograms. A block lesson on Botanical pesticides was prepared by partner schools’ teachers and implemented as a part of Ecological Agriculture curriculum. Furthermore, lessons on Protective clothing and equipment were implemented within the subject Plant Protection. All lessons were followed by a Kahoot quiz to test students’ newly gained knowledge on this topic; 3.

Sharing of good practice examples – a) students made posters with pictograms of danger which were exhibited in their schools but will also be reusable in lessons of vocational subjects b) students of SŠ Dalj created and posted a video about proper use of pesticides.
